“It’s 100% a Red Card” — Pundits Slam Referee for Sparing Messi in Algeria Clash

Messi’s controversial challenge on Algerian defender Aïssa Mandi.

A controversial shadow has fallen over Lionel Messi’s historic night against Algeria, as football pundits Ale Moreno and Nedum Onuoha slammed the officiating for failing to dismiss the Argentine captain.

Despite scoring a magnificent hat-trick, Messi found himself at the center of a raging debate following a dangerous challenge on Algerian defender Aïssa Mandi.

The incident, which occurred during Argentina’s 3-0 victory, saw Messi catch Mandi with a reckless challenge that many felt warranted an immediate ejection. Despite VAR being available, the legendary forward escaped any serious punishment, sparking fierce outrage across the footballing world.

Messi caught Mandi high on the shin and calf with a reckless, studs-up challenge. However, referee Szymon Marciniak and the Video Assistant Referee officials ultimately let the challenge go completely unpunished, refusing to issue a card or halt the game for a formal review.

“It probably should have been a red card in my opinion. And I think probably the referee could have missed it [the moment] but for the Video Assistant Referee to look at it and say…no that’s more fan, there’s more to it. I personally think that was a red card.” Onuoha said.

Analyzing the flashpoint on ESPN FC, former MLS forward Moreno pulled no punches about the leniency shown to the global icon. “It’s 100% a red card for Lionel Messi. It should’ve been,” Moreno stated bluntly, emphasizing that superstar status shouldn’t shield a player from the rules of the game.

Former Premier League defender Onuoha strongly echoed his colleague’s sentiments, expressing disbelief at how the refereeing team missed the severity of the tackle. Onuoha noted that if any other player on the pitch had made the exact same challenge on Mandi, they would have been sent straight to the dressing room.

The pundits argued that protecting player safety should always take precedence, regardless of whether the offender is competing in his historic 200th international match. They suggested the officials may have been hesitant to ruin Messi’s milestone evening by showing him a red card on the world stage.

Fans and analysts immediately took to social media to debate the tackle, as supporters questioned the consistency of VAR. While Argentine fans breathed a sigh of relief, Algerian supporters left the stadium feeling deeply aggrieved by the decision.

Had Messi been sent off, the entire complexion of the tournament could have shifted, as a straight red card would have resulted in his suspension for Argentina’s upcoming group-stage fixtures. Instead, the captain remained on the pitch to complete his World Record 16th World Cup goal.
