The Tunisian Football Federation is reportedly working to appoint experienced French coach Hervé Renard as the new national team manager following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi.
The move comes after Tunisia’s disappointing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their 2026 World Cup Group F opener on Monday.
Lamouchi was sacked shortly after the heavy loss in Mexico, with the federation moving quickly to address the poor start to the tournament. Reports indicate some initial confusion, including a deleted social media post and the sacked coach even taking training, but the decision to part ways has been confirmed.
Renard, 57, would bring experience from African teams, having previously guided Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations titles. He most recently managed Saudi Arabia, where he oversaw their qualification for this World Cup before being relieved of his duties earlier in 2026.
The Tunisian federation reportedly views Renard as the ideal short-term solution to stabilise the squad during the group stage. Talks are said to be advanced, and he is reportedly en route to join the team in Mexico ahead of their next match against Japan on June 21.
Tunisia’s campaign got off to a nightmare start against a clinical Sweden side featuring stars like Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres. The heavy defeat exposed defensive frailties and left the Carthage Eagles needing positive results quickly if they are to progress from a tough group that also includes the Netherlands.
Renard is said to have been offered assurances about a longer-term project beyond the current tournament.
