Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been called up to England’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a direct replacement for the injured Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento.
“Newcastle United defender Livramento picked up a calf injury in training on Sunday afternoon. A subsequent scan and medical assessment on Monday unfortunately confirmed he could play no further part in England’s tournament.” The FA statement partly reads.
The 26-year-old, who has one senior cap for the Three Lions, is expected to link up with the squad in Kansas City after England’s opening Group L match against Croatia on Wednesday. He could be available for the later group games against Ghana and Panama.
Chalobah’s arrival strengthens Thomas Tuchel’s defensive options at a time when squad depth is being tested. Primarily a centre-back, he offers positional flexibility and can also play at right-back or even left-back if required – qualities that align with Tuchel’s preference for versatile, tall defenders capable of adapting to different systems.
With Reece James as the first-choice right-back but carrying a history of fitness concerns, Chalobah provides a reliable backup. Ezri Konsa, who can operate across the backline, and others like Jarell Quansah, Marc Guéhi and John Stones already give Tuchel choices at centre-back. Chalobah’s mobility has previously been highlighted by the manager, who has described him as ahead of certain established names in that area.
“I see Trevoh Chalobah, on the level of mobility, as slightly ahead of him,” referring to Harry Maguire in March following an England-Uruguay friendly at Wembley. Maguire is among surprise exclusions in the England squad.
The call-up follows a pattern in Tuchel’s selections, where the German coach favours players who can deliver tactical solutions from the bench and maintain a strong team environment rather than chasing big names. Chalobah, known for his work ethic and consistency at club level, fits that profile well.
England’s defensive unit remains one of the more settled parts of the squad heading into the tournament, with Tuchel unlikely to overhaul his approach. Chalobah’s role is expected to be as a squad player providing rotation and emergency cover, allowing the manager to manage minutes across a demanding group stage and potential knockout run.
The change comes just before England’s campaign opener, but officials confirmed the timing complies with FIFA rules for squad replacements due to injury.
“FIFA regulations allow participating teams to replace an outfield player up to 24 hours before their opening fixture.” The FA added.
