Liverpool’s outgoing forward Mohamed Salah has issued a strong and direct statement to the club, calling on the Reds to return to their feared “heavy metal attacking team” identity and make consistent trophy-winning the non-negotiable standard.
In the message, shared ahead of his final game for the club, the Egyptian reflected on the journey he’s been part of and expressed his frustration at the current season’s struggles.
“I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions,” Salah wrote. “It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that.
“Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.
“Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games.”
Salah, who is set to leave Anfield at the end of the 2025-26 season, stressed that Liverpool will always hold a special place in his heart and for his family. He wants the club to thrive long after he’s gone and reaffirmed his commitment to the immediate task.
“As I’ve always said, qualifying for next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”
The statement comes after Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat by Aston Villa on Friday night, as the team fights to secure a top-four finish in what has been a challenging campaign. In their last 10 matches across all competitions, Liverpool has struggled with inconsistent form, recording four wins, one draw, and five losses.
Salah is one of the club’s greatest players — a key figure in the transformation under Jürgen Klopp that brought the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020, among other honours.
In 441 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool, Salah has scored 257 goals and provided 119 assists while winning 9 trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League.
