Tuchel Defends England World Cup Squad Selection Amid Backlash Over High-Profile Omissions

England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his choices for the 2026 World Cup squad, stressing the importance of balance and warning against overloading the team with too many attacking Number 10s – a decision that ultimately saw several big names left out, including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Lewis Hall and Jarrod Bowen were among the other notable absentees.

Speaking at the squad announcement press conference, Tuchel said: “Squad selection for the World Cup is always an exciting day, and I think it’s a good one for everyone who’s been picked. Right from Day 1, we’ve been very clear that building the best possible team isn’t necessarily about gathering the 26 most talented individuals.”

He stressed that individual brilliance alone doesn’t win major tournaments. “Teams win championships, as simple as that,” Tuchel added. “What we want to achieve this summer can only be done as a collective. With that in mind, we’ve gone for a very balanced squad.”

The German coach confirmed they had selected three goalkeepers plus Jason Steele, taking time to thank the Brighton man for his professionalism and the club for their support. “We chose nine defenders covering four positions, seven midfielders for three positions, and seven strikers from four positions,” he explained.

Tuchel insisted every member of the 26-man group is fully committed: “I can assure every fan in the country that we have 26 players who are 100% committed, who understand their roles, and are ready to buy into the team spirit both on and off the pitch. They’re prepared to be unselfish and put the team first.”

The selections have sparked debate. While many supporters have welcomed the clear focus on team chemistry and cohesion, others have questioned some of the inclusions – particularly John Stones and Jordan Henderson – given their recent form.
