Real Madrid have officially confirmed that David Alaba will be leaving the club when his contract expires this summer, with the 33-year-old Austrian defender set to become a free agent.
In a statement, club president Florentino Pérez paid warm tribute to the defender: “David Alaba takes with him the affection of all Madridistas for his commitment, his professionalism, and that unforgettable image from our path to the Fourteenth, which has become part of the club’s history. Real Madrid will always be his home.”
The Santiago Bernabéu is expected to honour Alaba during this Saturday’s final La Liga match against Athletic Club.
The Austrian centre-back arrived at Real Madrid in 2021 on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. However, his time at the club was heavily disrupted by injuries, most notably a serious ACL injury in 2023 that limited his appearances in recent seasons.
Several clubs across Europe have already shown interest in signing him, and reports suggest Major League Soccer could also be a realistic option, with multiple teams in the league keen on bringing him over.
Real Madrid are said to be prioritizing the return of former academy graduate Jacobo Ramón from Como, while also keeping close tabs on established targets such as Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté.
Alaba made 131 appearances for real Madrid in all competitions and won 11 trophies: two La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, two FIFA Club World Cups, two Supercopa de España titles, and one Copa del Rey.
