Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea to sign left-back Marc Cucurella for 6 years.
The transfer package is worth up to €60 million (£52 million), marking a significant defensive addition for the Spanish club.
Reports suggest the deal consists of an initial fixed fee of €55 million, supplemented by an additional €5 million in performance-related add-ons. Official documentation is expected to be finalized within the week, though the player will not officially complete the move until after his commitments with the Spain national team conclude.
Cucurella is currently away with the national squad preparing for international fixtures. While Atletico Madrid and Manchester City previously monitored his situation, Real Madrid moved quickly to secure his signature.
The 27-year-old defender is said to have been frustrated with the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge following a challenging season where Chelsea missed out on European qualification. Despite recent positive remarks about the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new manager, the opportunity to return to Spain proved decisive.
The sale is part of Chelsea’s strategic decision to recoup a large portion of the money to buy a replacement. The Blues are also reportedly reassured by the development and form of 20-year-old Dutch defender Jorrel Hato.
Meanwhile, Cucurella’s transfer is part of a broader defensive overhaul at Real Madrid under newly reappointed manager José Mourinho. The club has already finalized several high-profile acquisitions to bolster the squad after consecutive seasons without a major trophy.
Alongside Cucurella, the Spanish giants have secured agreements for Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries and former Liverpool center-back Ibrahima Konaté. Midfielder Bernardo Silva is also set to join the club on a free transfer from Manchester City.
Speculation remains open as to whether Real Madrid will pursue further negotiations with Chelsea for other players before the summer window closes. Attention has turned toward midfielder Enzo Fernández, who has also been linked with a potential move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Cucurella, who joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for an initial £55 million fee plus £7 million in add-ons, had a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2029. He has made 139 appearances for the club, scoring 8 goals and providing 10 assists, and contributed to Chelsea’s wins in the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
