South Africa managed to avoid another tough result in their World Cup campaign by holding Czechia to a 1-1 draw in their second group match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Thursday.

Both teams entered the game desperate for points after losing their opening fixtures.

Czechia started the match with real purpose and took the lead very early, with Michal Sadílek finding the back of the net in just the sixth minute. The goal gave Czechia confidence, and they looked solid in defense during the opening stages. South Africa, on the other hand, had to chase the game from that moment onward.

The first half saw Czechia control much of the play. They created several chances and kept the South African goalkeeper busy. South Africa tried to push forward but struggled to break down the organized Czech defense. Players on both sides showed determination, yet the score remained 1-0 in favor of Czechia at the break.

South Africa showed more urgency after the restart. Coach Hugo Broos brought on Relebohile Mofokeng for Oswin Appollis at half-time to add fresh attacking options on the wing. The change helped South Africa gain more possession and create better moments near the Czech goal. Czechia sat deeper to protect their narrow lead.

As the second half continued, the game opened up as both sides traded chances, but strong goalkeeping and solid defending prevented further goals for a long time. South Africa grew in belief, and their fans in the stands urged them forward with loud support. Czechia looked dangerous on the break but could not add a second goal.

Czechia made changes around the 55th minute to maintain control. Jaroslav Zelený replaced Ladislav Krejčí at left-back, and Pavel Šulc came on for Patrik Schick in attack to bring energy and fresh legs into the side. However, South Africa continued to press and looked more dangerous as the minutes ticked by.

In the 67th minute, Czechia brought on Tomáš Souček and Lukáš Provod for additional midfield strength and creativity. South Africa responded with their own changes, including Khuliso Mudau, to keep the pressure on. The match became a real battle of endurance in the warm Atlanta conditions, and Czechia were pressed into their own box for most of the final minutes.

Late in the game, South Africa earned a penalty when David Zima handled the ball inside the box. Teboho Mokoena stepped forward in the 83rd minute and calmly converted from the spot, equalizing for Bafana Bafana and sparking wild celebrations among the South African players and supporters.

The goal lifted South Africa, and they pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages. Czechia defended deeply. Both teams showed great commitment until the final whistle blew on the 1-1 result.

South Africa opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a humiliating 0-2 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening Group B match, exposing serious defensive frailties and piling early pressure on Bafana Bafana.  The match was marred by red cards, with two South African players and one Mexican dismissed. In the other Group A fixture, Czechia began their tournament with a narrow 2-1 loss to South Korea.

Both teams now have one point from two matches in Group A. Czechia and South Africa keep slim hopes of advancing alive, with each team remaining with one game to play in the group stage. The group is currently led by co-hosts Mexico with 3 points and a goal difference of +2, while South Korea also has 3 points and a goal difference of +1. The two teams will face each other in the second game on Friday.
