Atlético Madrid have rejected Real Madrid’s €150 million bid for striker Julián Álvarez, after days of intense speculation surrounding a blockbuster transfer move promised by president Florentino Pérez.
The bid follows recent remarks from Pérez, who stated that the club would make a €150 million offer for a leading player from a Champions League side. He declined to identify the target at the time, prompting widespread debate across European football over who the player might be.
On Tuesday, Real Madrid ended that uncertainty by confirming that Álvarez was the player in question. The club said its board had approved the proposal and formally approached Atlético regarding the transfer.
“…following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atlético de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julián Álvarez.
“After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atlético de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.” Real Madrid announced in a statement.
Atlético acknowledged receiving the offer but swiftly rejected it with mockery.
Club officials reportedly pointed to Álvarez’s contractual release clause of €500 million, which is significantly higher than the amount proposed by their city rivals.
The attempted deal is notable not only because of its size but also because transfers between the two Madrid clubs are relatively uncommon, particularly involving a player regarded as one of Atlético’s most important assets.
Álvarez has emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards in world football following a series of impressive performances in Spain. He made 49 total appearances for Atlético Madrid across all competitions, scoring 20 goals and providing 9 assists, and a total of 29 direct goal involvements in the 2025/26 campaign.
His reputation has attracted interest from several major European clubs, increasing attention on his long-term future.
Pérez had described the planned signing as a potential “Galáctico”-level acquisition and suggested the move would represent the largest transfer offer in Real Madrid’s history.
Before Álvarez was revealed as the target, media speculation had linked Real Madrid’s proposed €150 million bid to several elite players across Europe, including Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise. Pérez publicly denied some of those reports while maintaining that a major approach was imminent.
Despite Atlético’s rejection, the development underlines Real Madrid’s willingness to invest heavily as the club seeks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season. Whether the Spanish champions decide to return with an improved offer remains unclear.
For now, Álvarez remains an Atlético Madrid player, but Real Madrid’s record-breaking approach has ensured that his future will remain one of the most closely watched stories of the summer transfer window.
