Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in front of a passionate crowd at Estadio Azteca on June 11.
The co-hosts got off to a strong start, with Julián Quiñones netting the tournament’s first goal in the ninth minute to give El Tri an early lead.
The game quickly turned chaotic in the second half. South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole received a straight red card in the 49th minute for a last-man challenge on Brian Gutiérrez just outside the box, denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Bafana Bafana were forced to play with ten men as Mexico pushed for more.
Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage in the 67th minute, capitalizing on the numerical edge. His clinical finish gave the hosts breathing room and left South Africa struggling to mount a comeback while a man down.
Discipline continued to crumble. South Africa’s Themba Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute for violent conduct, reducing Bafana Bafana to nine players. The incident further disrupted their shape and left them vulnerable in the closing stages.
Mexico’s César Montes became the third player dismissed in stoppage time for a deliberate tactical foul. Even with the advantage, the hosts finished the match with ten men in a game marked by high tension and referee decisions.
The three red cards made this one of the most dramatic opening matches in recent World Cup history.
For Mexico, the win provides a solid three points and early momentum in Group A. Coach Javier Aguirre will be pleased with the result but will want to address the late lapse in discipline that saw Montes sent off.
South Africa showed moments of promise despite the heavy numerical disadvantage. Coach Hugo Broos’ side battled hard, but the double red cards proved too much to overcome against a clinical home side.
Mexico’s control of possession and clinical finishing were decisive. South Africa’s aggressive challenges reflected their desire to compete but ultimately cost them dearly in terms of personnel and structure.
Both teams now look ahead to their next fixtures, with Mexico riding high and Bafana Bafana seeking redemption after a tough night in Mexico City.
