Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer.
The Spurs have identified the 26-year-old Italian as a key target as they look to strengthen their squad under new manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a £55 million deal in 2023, has established himself as a reliable performer in the Premier League. He overcame a 10-month betting ban and has become a central figure in the Magpies’ midfield, contributing with both defensive solidity and attacking transitions.
Newcastle are understood to value the player at around £85-100 million, reflecting his importance and long-term contract, which runs until 2029 with the option of a further year. The club has been reluctant to part with key assets but could face pressure if substantial offers arrive.
De Zerbi sees Tonali as the ideal addition to elevate Spurs’ midfield quality and support his tactical vision, following struggles last season that saw them almost relegated from the Premier League. The Italian coach reportedly views the signing as central to an ambitious project aimed at improving the team’s competitiveness in the Premier League and European competitions.
Tottenham will compete with several other Premier League sides, including Arsenal and Manchester City, who have also shown interest in the Italy international. No formal bids have been submitted yet, but talks between the clubs could begin soon as the transfer window heats up.
The development comes after a challenging season for Tottenham, during which they navigated managerial changes and fought to avoid relegation threats. Securing a player of Tonali’s calibre would signal clear intent to rebuild and challenge higher up the table.
Tonali has been linked with a potential move away from St James’ Park amid speculation over Newcastle’s squad plans. While he has previously expressed commitment to the Magpies, reports suggest he could be open to a fresh challenge in north London if the right opportunity arises.
