Tottenham Hotspur survived relegation from the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day of the 2025/26 season on Sunday, thanks to Joao Palhinha’s goal in the 43rd minute.

The win capped a turbulent campaign for Spurs. Despite lifting the 2025 Europa League, they endured a long winless streak in the league, multiple managerial changes, and a tense fight against the relegation.

Fans turned out in force, lining the streets to welcome the team and lift spirits before kick-off, then celebrated wildly inside the stadium once safety was secured. Even with Roberto De Zerbi’s side staying up on the final day, the season laid bare serious issues around consistency and overall performance.

Relegation would have been a major financial and reputational blow for a club of Tottenham’s stature, losing out on Premier League broadcast revenue, sponsorships, and European opportunities. This could have cost them well over £100 million in the first year alone, forcing painful cuts and wage reductions.

Spurs were last relegated from the top flight in 1977 under Keith Burkinshaw, spending just one season in the Second Division before returning. In the 2025/26 Premier League season, they scored 47 goals but conceded 57 — a reflection of defensive vulnerabilities and an attack that never quite found its rhythm.

Meanwhile, West Ham United were relegated alongside Wolves and Burnley despite a 3-0 win against Leeds United on the final day. The Hammers finished 18th with 36 points, dropping out of the top flight for the first time since the 2010/11 season after a difficult campaign under Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Hammers scored 43 goals while conceding 65, with a leaky defence proving costly throughout the year.

West Ham were last relegated after finishing bottom in the 2010/11 season with 33 points (7 wins, 12 draws, 19 losses). That drop was confirmed on the second to last weekend following a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Wigan Athletic, despite leading 2-0 at half-time. They bounced back by winning the Championship play-offs and returned to the Premier League for the 2012/13 season.
