Federico Valverde delivered a standout performance as Uruguay drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup Group H.

The Real Madrid midfielder, captaining Uruguay, was named Player of the Match after driving his team forward in a hard-fought contest at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Saudi Arabia took a surprise lead in the 41st minute when defender Abdulelah Al-Amri headed home from a corner. Uruguay, under manager Marcelo Bielsa, struggled to break down a resilient Saudi defence in the first half but showed improved control after the break.

Valverde, operating in a right-sided midfield role, dictated much of the tempo with his energy and passing range. He repeatedly surged forward from deep positions, creating threats and helping Uruguay dominate possession as they pushed for an equalizer.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 80th minute when Maximiliano Araújo found the net to level the scores. Uruguay continued to press late on, with Valverde involved in several dangerous moments, though Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais made a string of important saves.

The 27-year-old’s tireless display in both phases of the game earned him the official Player of the Match award. His leadership and work rate stood out as Uruguay sought to adapt to life without some of their retired senior figures such as Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godín, and Fernando Muslera.

The result leaves both teams with one point each from their Group H opener. Uruguay will now turn their attention to tougher tests ahead, including matches against Spain and Cape Verde, as they aim to advance from the group.
