Reports have emerged that Real Madrid have pulled away from any further pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez following the rejection of their big-money offer.
This comes about ten days after the Spanish giants made their formal approach public. The move has left the door open for their rivals Barcelona to stay in the picture.
Real Madrid had surprised many by officially confirming a €150 million bid for Álvarez on June 9. The club released a statement saying their board had approved the offer for the player’s rights.
“…following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atlético de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julián Álvarez. After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atlético de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause,” Real Madrid announced on June 9.
Atlético Madrid quickly turned it down and pointed straight to the Argentine’s €500 million release clause in his contract. Atlético’s response was sharp and public. They made it clear they would not consider any offers below the release clause and took to social media to mock their city rivals. One post even suggested Real Madrid made them laugh more than Barcelona ever did.
The €150 million figure carried extra weight because it tied directly into club president Florentino Pérez’s promises. After his re-election earlier in June, Pérez had spoken about making a major offer for a top player to excite fans. The bid for Álvarez appeared to fulfill that pledge in dramatic fashion.
Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for around €81.5 million, signing a long-term deal that runs until 2030, and quickly became an important part of the team’s attack.
The 26-year-old Argentine has shown strong form since arriving in Madrid, contributing a healthy number of goals across league and European competitions this season. His performances have also kept him in the spotlight with the Argentina national team, where he remains a key figure after the 2022 World Cup success.
Barcelona have shown interest in Álvarez for some time. They see him as a possible long-term option to ease the workload on veteran striker Robert Lewandowski. Reports earlier in the summer suggested the Catalan club had already made contact with Atlético to gauge the situation.
At one stage, Barcelona reportedly tabled an offer around the €100 million mark. That bid was also rejected by Atlético, who responded with their own pointed messages on social media. The club accused its rivals of spreading misleading information about the player’s future.
The player himself appears to favor a move to Barcelona. Sources close to the situation say Álvarez has made it known that he would like to join the club and take on a starring role in attack. He has reportedly turned down approaches from other big European sides, including Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
Atlético have remained firm in their position throughout. President Enrique Cerezo has repeatedly stated that Álvarez is not for sale and expects him to stay at the club for years to come, pointing to the player’s contract running until 2030 as proof of their long-term commitment.
The massive €500 million release clause has been used by Atlético to shut down most serious discussions. However, some reports suggest the club might be open to a negotiated fee significantly lower than that headline number if the right circumstances arise.
The rivalry between the Madrid clubs added extra spice to the story. Atlético used the rejection of the Real Madrid bid to take another swipe at both their city neighbors and Barcelona. Their social media posts highlighted the ongoing tension and accused their rivals of various tactics over the years.
Now comes the latest development in this fast-moving story. Real Madrid have not followed up their initial €150 million proposal with any new offer or further discussions. According to sources close to Atlético, Real Madrid have effectively disappeared from the picture since the bid was turned down.
Some observers believe the original bid was never meant as a serious long-term pursuit but may have served as a way for Florentino Pérez to deliver on his election promise or to drive up Álvarez’s value and complicate matters for Barcelona. Real Madrid are now said to be focused on other targets instead.
Barcelona, on the other hand, continue to show strong interest. Reports indicate the club remains in regular daily contact regarding a possible deal for the striker. Their representatives are understood to be speaking frequently with people close to the player and monitoring developments at Atlético.
Everything now appears to rest on Atlético Madrid’s final decision. The club holds all the cards because of the player’s contract and the high release clause. Without their agreement to negotiate or accept a fee, no move can happen.
Interestingly, some reports suggest Barcelona could secure Álvarez for less than the €150 million Real Madrid offered. Negotiations could involve structured payments or other arrangements that bring the total cost down while still satisfying Atlético’s demands.
A move for Álvarez would reshape the attacking options at either Real Madrid or Barcelona and shift the balance in future El Clásico matches. But we can only wait and see whether a deal will be possible for either Real Madrid or Barcelona before the transfer window closes. Until then, Álvarez remains an Atlético Madrid player.
Álvarez has emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards in world football following a series of impressive performances in Spain. He made 49 total appearances for Atlético Madrid across all competitions, scoring 20 goals and providing 9 assists, for a total of 29 direct goal involvements in the 2025/26 campaign.
