
Lionel Messi scored a brace and provided an assist for Inter Miami on Wednesday night, narrowly missing out on reaching 910 career goals in a thrilling 8-goal Major League Soccer game.
Messi’s Inter Miami defeated Cincinnati 5-3. An 89th-minute goal earlier thought to have been scored by the Argentine was determined after review to be an own goal by goalkeeper Roman Celentano.
Messi’s brace came in the 24th and 55th minutes, taking his career goal tally to 909 in 1,153 total appearances for club and country. The 38-year-old forward, who captains both Inter Miami and the Argentina national team, joined MLS in 2023.
He made 778 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 672 goals in all competitions, before joining PSG in 2021, where he appeared 75 times and scored 32 goals in all competitions.
At Inter Miami, Messi has made 102 appearances and scored 89 goals in all competitions, while 198 appearances and 116 goals have come for his country.
He trails Al-Nassr and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 971 career goals in 1,321 total appearances for club and country.
