Sam Kerr tied Fran Kirby’s all-time goalscoring record for Chelsea in what turned out to be her final game for the club.
Kerr scored the only goal that gave Chelsea the win against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the final game of the season — and her last appearance in a Blues shirt.
She has now scored 115 goals for Chelsea, equalling Kirby at the top of the club’s all-time leading women’s goalscorers list.
Sixty-five of those goals came in the Women’s Super League, where she is also the club’s record scorer, along with 20 in the Champions League, 19 in the FA Cup, and 12 in the League Cup.
The 32-year-old will leave Chelsea when her contract expires this summer after six-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, during which she made 157 appearances in all competitions.
“When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy,” Kerr said ahead of her final Blues appearance.
“Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could.
“The only thing that comes to my mind is remembering all the happy moments, the fun moments, and just feeling really proud.”
Kerr was Chelsea’s top scorer during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns, both of which saw Chelsea crowned champions. She twice earned the Women’s Super League Golden Boot after the club claimed successive titles.
She scored 29 goals in 38 appearances in the 2022/23 season as the Blues secured another WSL and FA Cup double.
She was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season, in addition to collecting the WSL Player of the Year Award and the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year. Kerr was also named in the PFA’s WSL Team of the Year.
In October 2023, Kerr finished second in the Ballon d’Or. Unfortunately, having reached 99 goals for Chelsea, she sustained a knee injury the following January and was sidelined for 20 months.
After battling back to full fitness, Kerr made her return to action against Aston Villa in September. She was introduced as a 75th-minute substitute and promptly scored her 100th Chelsea goal.
