Pep Guardiola is set to leave Manchester City this summer after a decade in charge, with an official farewell to fans expected in the coming days, according to Fabrizio Romano and other reports.
Enzo Maresca, who served as Guardiola’s assistant during City’s 2023 treble-winning campaign, who is also former Chelsea Manager, is the only candidate currently in contention to succeed him, multiple sources suggest.
Reports indicate Maresca has long been Manchester City’s preferred option to step into the role should Guardiola depart.
The anticipated departure would bring to a close Guardiola’s extraordinary tenure, during which he delivered multiple Premier League titles, a Champions League triumph, and transformed City into one of European football’s most dominant sides.
According to BBC Sport, the club has been preparing for the possibility of his exit following Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. But Manchester City continue to stress that Guardiola remains under contract for next season and remain hopeful he will stay on as manager.
Guardiola arrived at the Etihad on July 1,2016, inheriting a side that had finished fourth in the Premier League the previous season under Manuel Pellegrini. By the time of this publication, he had overseen 591 matches for the club, recording 423 wins, 76 draws and 92 defeats.
During his time in charge, he has secured 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five Carabao EFL Cups, three Community Shields, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.
His achievements include a record-breaking 100-point Premier League season and an overall win rate of around 71.6%. While these feats stand alongside — and in some eyes rival — Sir Alex Ferguson’s unparalleled 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United, the question of who ranks as the greatest coach in Premier League history continues to spark lively debate.
