Benfica has confirmed Marco Silva is set to take over as its new head coach after reaching an agreement for a contract for two seasons, extendable until the 2028/29 campaign.
The Portuguese giants formalized the decision through an official regulatory filing submitted to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica, SAD announces, in a statement to the CMVM, that it has reached an agreement with Marco Silva for the signing of an employment contract valid for two seasons, extendable until 2028/29,” the official club statement reads.
Silva’s move to Benfica marks a significant homecoming for the tactical mastermind, who returns to manage in his home country after an impressive nine-year stint abroad. Silva left Premier League club Fulham on June 2, following the expiration of his contract, concluding a highly successful five-year tenure at Craven Cottage.
He transformed Fulham from a vulnerable club into a stable Premier League fixture, breaking its relegation cycle by winning the Championship title in 2022.
In his final campaign with the club, he guided the team to a comfortable 11th-place finish with 47 points, mirroring their competitive stability in the top flight.
Benfica announced shortly earlier that it had formally informed Portugal’s financial market regulator, the CMVM, that Jose Mourinho would be heading back to Real Madrid after the Spanish club triggered the €15 million exit clause for the manager.
