Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has been forced to make a last-minute alteration to his World Cup squad after AS Roma right-back Wesley França was ruled out through injury.
Wesley suffered an adductor injury in his left thigh during Brazil’s 2-1 friendly victory over Egypt. Medical assessments confirmed that the AS Roma defender will be unable to participate in the World Cup, creating an unexpected vacancy in Ancelotti’s 26-man squad.
In a statement, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said:
“The MRI scan revealed a muscle injury in the adductor muscle of the left thigh.”
“The CBF regrets the injury. Wesley is a beloved player within the group and will always be considered part of this team that is seeking its sixth world championship.”
The withdrawal is particularly significant because Wesley’s absence depletes Brazil’s options at right-back. It could force tactical adjustments, with experienced defenders such as Danilo among the options capable of covering the position.
Meanwhile, Éderson, who had not been included in Brazil’s original World Cup selection, now receives an opportunity to contribute on football’s biggest stage after impressing as a midfielder with Atalanta in Serie A.
“In light of the diagnosis, the CBF announces the call-up of player Éderson, who will join the delegation this Monday in the United States,” the CBF added.
The 26-year-old arrives with growing attention surrounding his club future. Reports in recent days have linked him with a move to Manchester United, with expectations that a transfer could be finalized following the World Cup. While no official announcement has yet been made by the clubs involved, the midfielder is widely viewed as a leading target as United look to strengthen their midfield options.
Brazil begin their World Cup campaign in Group C, where they are scheduled to face Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti as they pursue a record-extending sixth world title. They will kick-start the campaign with a match against Morocco on Saturday, June 13.
