AC Milan have officially announced the appointment of former Machester United and Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.
The 41-year-old Portuguese manager has signed a contract until June 2028, with an option for a further year. He replaces Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked last month after the club finished fifth in Serie A and missed out on Champions League qualification.
Commenting on the appointment, Gerry Cardinale, the Managing Partner of RedBird Capital Partners, the owners of AC Milan, said: “We have tracked Rúben for years and his Sporting tenure is extremely impressive and reflects the style of play that we are looking for. He is one of the most prepared and innovative coaches of the new European generation – young, ambitious, and with a modern footballing identity defined by dominating games in possession, a modern pressing system and a clear tactical approach.”
Cardinale implied that Amorim’s high press attacking football tactic could have inspired Milan to hire him to maximize goal scoring.
“Rúben believes in high press attacking football with quick transitions that enable greater goal scoring. His philosophy aligns perfectly with our vision, while his leadership qualities and track record in developing players stood out to us.” He added.
Amorim returns to management five months after leaving Manchester United. He is expected to take charge ahead of the 2026-27 season and will bring several members of his backroom staff to the San Siro.
Known for his high-pressing 3-4-3 system, Amorim has a strong track record of developing young players and delivering attacking football. He previously won two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting Lisbon.
The move forms part of a major rebuild at Milan following a difficult campaign. Club officials described the appointment as a key step towards restoring the Rossoneri to the top of Italian and European football.
Amorim is scheduled to address the media in the coming days once he completes his travel and final arrangements. He is set to begin work with the squad during pre-season.
