Maurizio Sarri has appeared to suggest he could leave Lazio, saying he “wasn’t listened to at all” at the club.

This follows Lazio’s 2-0 loss to Roma on Sunday, after which Sarri reacted angrily, saying he was “far from happy” and adding: “If our plans don’t align, there’s no point in moving forward.”

He continued: “…Perhaps the club isn’t happy either. Let’s finish the season and see if they have anything to say to me.”

However, Sarri also made clear his desire to stay at Lazio, stating: “…but when it comes to the club, if our plans don’t align, there’s no point in moving forward.”

Sarri is reportedly the favourite to replace Antonio Conte should the latter leave Napoli this summer. Despite securing a Champions League spot, multiple reports in Italy have suggested Conte could depart the club.

Sarri made a sensational return as Lazio head coach on June 2, 2025, signing a two-year contract after initially resigning from the club in March 2024. Taking over from Marco Baroni, he inherited a squad that had suffered a sharp decline in form and missed out on European qualification.

His second spell has produced mixed results, with the team averaging 1.49 points per match across 41 games. A highlight was winning the Coppa Italia in the 2025/26 campaign, where the side performed strongly with a 2.50 points-per-match average in the competition.

However, consistency in Serie A has been more elusive, with Lazio hovering between 8th and 11th place for much of the season. They currently sit 9th with 51 points, with one match remaining.

They have recorded five wins, two draws, and three defeats in their last 10 Serie A games, and have scored 45 goals while conceding 44 across both competitions they have played in this season (Serie A and Coppa Italia).
