The United States made a strong start to their home 2026 World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay on Friday night at SoFi Stadium.

An early own goal set the tone for the hosts. Paraguay defender Damián Bobadilla turned a shot from Weston McKennie into his own net in the seventh minute.

Monaco’s Folarin Balogun then took control. The 24-year-old former Arsenal striker scored twice before halftime, first tapping in a cross from Christian Pulisic in the 31st minute and then firing a superb strike in stoppage time to make it 3-0.

Paraguay pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Maurício, but the United States responded late. Giovanni Reyna curled in a stylish trivela goal in the 90th minute to seal the 4-1 win.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed confidence and attacking flair in front of a packed crowd that included many celebrities. Pulisic provided a key assist before leaving at halftime as a precaution.

Speaking about Pulisic’s situation, Pochettino said “He received a kick in his calf and he felt tight at the end of the first half. We didn’t want to take any risks. It was difficult for him to walk but hope that it is not a big issue and he can be ready for the next one.”

About the win, Pochettino said: “So, so proud. Players and staff deserved big credit for this performance.

“The most important is the performance and the feeling. We know it is only the start and it is nothing. It is only one game. Now we need to be intelligent to keep [going] in that direction.”

The result marks one of the strongest World Cup opening performances in U.S. history and sends an early message in Group D. Balogun’s brace was the first multi-goal game by an American player in a World Cup match since 1930.

The U.S. next face Australia on June 19 in Seattle as they look to build on this impressive opening night.
