Xabi Alonso is reportedly keeping tabs on Liverpool, just in case they sack Arne Slot, to become their manager.
Alonso is widely considered ready to prefer Liverpool over Chelsea, who are reportedly highly considering him as their next manager, as *The i Paper* reports.
The paper quotes anonymous sources it says are close to Alonso, saying the Spaniard wants to wait and see if his former club lets Slot go.
It is reported that Chelsea are highly considering Alonso to be their new manager after sacking Liam Rosenior on April 22, 2026. Rosenior was in charge for only 106 days and oversaw a disastrous run of five consecutive Premier League defeats before his sacking.
He managed just 11 wins in 23 matches having been appointed from Strasbourg in January.
Since taking over as interim head coach, Calum McFarlane has helped the Blues win just one of the three games managed, losing one — a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at home on May 4, 2026 — and drawing one, a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on May 9, 2026.
Their 1-0 win against Leeds United on April 26, 2026 took Chelsea to the FA Cup Final against Manchester City to be played on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
In the manager’s race, Chelsea are said to be considering other candidates, including former Blues midfielder Cesc Fàbregas — now managing Como — Marco Silva who is out of contract at Fulham, Andoni Iraola who has already confirmed he will be leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season, and former Chelsea defender Filipe Luís.
With Chelsea’s tradition of sacking managers quite often, Alonso could be looking to return to management with a more stable club.
Alonso left club management on January 11, 2026, when he departed Real Madrid by mutual consent. During his tenure, he achieved a 63% win rate across 73 matches but faced immense pressure after failing to overtake Barcelona in La Liga.
