Robbie Keane has stepped down as manager of Ferencváros, bringing his time at the Hungarian club to an end.
The former Celtic striker took over in January 2025 after leaving Maccabi Tel Aviv. While his tenure delivered domestic trophies and respectable European runs, it concluded with Ferencváros finishing second in the league, narrowly missing out on the title.
Keane had earlier expressed his disappointment at missing out on the title saying: “I am not [happy]. With the Europa League and the cup victory, yes, but of course we wanted to win the championship as well. That is my mentality, this winning mentality, that I always want more and more. I think that anyone who does not think like this as a coach or a player has no place in football.”
The timing of his departure has immediately fuelled speculation linking him with the Celtic job, especially as Martin O’Neill’s interim spell draws to a close. As a former player at Parkhead, Keane is seen by many as a strong contender.
Pundits believe his mix of tactical flexibility, high-intensity attacking football and demanding approach to player development could be exactly what the Scottish champions need.
In total, Keane oversaw 73 matches for Ferencváros, recording 44 wins, 14 draws and 15 defeats. He delivered the club’s seventh straight Nemzeti Bajnokság I title in the 2024–25 season and added the 2026 Magyar Kupa to his collection.
He also earned a strong reputation for improving young players, most notably academy graduate Alex Tóth, who went on to secure a big-money move to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
