In a surprising turn of events, Feyenoord have parted ways with head coach Robin van Persie after only a single full season at the helm.

While the Rotterdam club locked down a second-place finish in the Eredivisie—securing a ticket to next season’s UEFA Champions League—the achievement wasn’t enough to save the manager’s job.

The 42-year-old club icon had returned to his boyhood team in February 2025 following a managerial stint at SC Heerenveen. Though his contract was slated to run until June 2027, Feyenoord’s leadership decided a change was necessary after conducting a comprehensive end-of-season internal review regarding the squad’s progress.

In an official club statement, newly appointed technical director Devy Rigaux praised Van Persie’s dedication but highlighted underlying concerns. The review flagged issues with the team’s tactical progress alongside a worrying a decline in points accumulation in both domestic and European competitions.

Ultimately, management decided that entering the 2026-27 campaign with a fresh perspective on the bench was the right path forward.

Rigaux admitted the call was a tough one to make:

“Robin van Persie has given everything for the club over the past 18 months. He deserves credit for guiding the team through a challenging season and ultimately securing second place. That ensured qualification for the UEFA Champions League, which is of great importance to the club.”

“We conducted a thorough internal evaluation in which we looked at several factors, including the development of the team’s performances and the downward trend in points collected, both in Europe and in the Eredivisie. The conclusion was that it would be better to start the new season with a new head coach.”

While a runner-up finish looks solid on paper, the underlying numbers tell a different story. Feyenoord crossed the finish line a massive 19 points behind league champions PSV Eindhoven and failed to pick up any silverware. Underwhelming performances in cup competitions and on the continental stage heavily weighed on the board’s final verdict.

The club “expects to name Van Persie’s successor in the next few weeks.”

His abrupt exit marks a bittersweet chapter in his storied, lifelong relationship with Feyenoord, the very club where he began and ended his legendary playing career before transitioning to coaching.
