The Danish Football Association (DBU) has confirmed that midfielder Christian Eriksen is conscious and receiving medical care after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday.
The federation released a brief update stating that the 34-year-old is “doing well under the circumstances” following the incident.
The match, held in Odense, was abandoned in the 64th minute with Denmark leading 2-1 shortly after Eriksen went down. Medical personnel responded immediately on the field before the Wolfsburg midfielder was transported to a local hospital for further examination.
According to Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen, Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly and was able to walk off the pitch before entering the ambulance.
The DBU quoted Boesen directly:
“Christian is doing well and walked off the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. Now he needs to be examined further at the hospital to find out what caused the incident. We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and say that he was okay.”
The incident echoed memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during the European Championship in 2021. Following that episode, he underwent surgery to receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and successfully resumed both his club and international career.
Medical staff have indicated that further testing will be carried out to determine the exact cause of Sunday’s collapse.
Everyone at Footballery wishes Eriksen a quick and full recovery. Our thoughts and best wishes are with his family, teammates, friends, and fans during this time.
