Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as their permanent head coach on a contract until 2028.
He had been in interim charge for 16 matches, winning 11 of them.
A club legend who made 464 appearances as a midfielder and served as captain, Carrick stepped into the role in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim’s departure. He oversaw a strong turnaround, guiding the team to a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Carrick was named Premier League Manager of the Month after securing impressive victories against Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two games.
During his playing days at Old Trafford, he won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the Europa League and the Club World Cup.
Upon his appointment as permanent head coach, Carrick said: “From the moment I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.
“Carrying the responsibility of leading this special football club fills me with immense pride.
“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.
“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said: “Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In the time he has been in the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.
“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated. He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture he has helped build at Carrington and in the dressing room.”
